Social, Environmental and Ethical Factors in Engineering Design Theory: a Post-Positivist Approach 2nd Edn (Terence Love). ISBN: 978-1-876394-12-7
This book addresses major issue in design theory. It brings together social, environmental, ethical and technical factors into a single unified coherent body of theory. The book identifies weaknesses in the design theory literature - many of which have over time become institutionalised and 'hidden' whilst in public view. The book then explores and identifies theory frames and core conceptual structures needed to resolve these problems. In undertaking this study, a meta-theoretical taxonomy is developed that provides a comprehensive basis for cataloguing the large number of different design theory elements found in the design literature, along with their relationships. From these analyses emerges a coherent theoretical framework that integrates technical, human and environmental aspects of design activity. The book contains two large appendices. The first provides a extensive review of engineering design literature from the 1950s to the late 90s. The second appendix outlines an taxonomy of different sub-fields of engineering design.
